Implant dentistry is an important part of dental practice today. If you have missing teeth, there are different types of implants that you can choose from depending on your individual case and preference.

The success rate of the implant is about 95%. It is a permanent prosthesis which is fitted in the bone by drilling the bone. Once the implant is fixed in the bone, bone healing occurs in the form of bone formation around the implant.

An implant treatment can be performed for a single tooth, multiple teeth or as support for complete dentures. It does not affect the nearby teeth as it does in case of bridgework.

Implant types

Traditional types of implants are Endosteal and Subperiosteal implants.

Traditional implants

Endosteal implants are the more traditional type wherein a screw is fitted into your jawbone. After the healing period, the screw gets stabilized with a metal post and finally, a dental restoration is placed resembling the natural tooth.

Subperiosteal implants are placed over the jawbone. These implants usually act as a support for making bridges or complete dentures. They are used in cases where bone resorption (bone height and bone density gets reduced) has taken place; that is when the bone is too weak to support an implant.

Real-like teeth in 3 days

Basal implants are one of the newest implant systems in India which are also known as immediate loading implants. These implants (along with the prosthesis) can be placed in a matter of three days which is a great plus point for patients.

Basal implants

Basal implants are placed in the basal bone, which is dense in nature. It is less prone to infection and resorption, provides better support.

In case of any bone deformities, an implant requires a pre-prosthetic surgery in order to get embedded into the bone. But in the case of basal implants, the need for such surgery is eliminated.

While placing the basal implant one need not worry much about the systemic conditions they if they have any. They can be placed in patients with cardiovascular disorders, immunosuppression and cancer patients too. This is because of minimal invasion and fast healing.

Advantages of basal implants

  • Fewer patient visits
  • The tooth is replaced within 3 days
  • No surgical procedure
  • Bloodless field
  • More cost-effective
  • Less painful
  • More patient comfort
  • More dentist efficiency
  • Fewer chances of failure and complications

The only disadvantage of the basal implant is the compromised aesthetics in a few patients.

Advances in implant dentistry

Immediate implants

Nowadays a dental implant can also be placed immediately after the removal of a tooth. This helps when patients are more concerned about their aesthetics with the fear of losing their teeth. This also considerably reduces the treatment time and visits for the patient.

Immediate implants have a slightly higher chance of failure if :

  • It may not be biocompatible to a few patients
  • There is an underlying systemic condition or any diseases
  • In patients when healing takes longer than expected
  • If there is an infection present in the mouth

Mini implants

Mini dental implants are another new advancement in implant dentistry. They too do not require invasive surgery and have a good prognosis. It is a narrow diameter dental implant used for lower implant-supported dentures.

There is a large variety of implants available today in the dental market. Basal implant systems have a lot of benefits and are becoming more and more common. However, depending on the case, your dentist is always in a better position to choose the right implant system for you.
